Below is a picture taken a few years ago while visiting the Midlands of England searching for Matkin(s) ancestors. This is Richard Matkin. who was born in Bakewell, next to the grave of one of his ancestors. They go back SEVERAL generations. Richard and his wife Delma live in the area of Nottingham and were quite helpful (and delightful hosts), taking my wife and me all around the area on our quest. We have recently received word that Richard, who was an unsung hero of World War II, died of cancer on February 11, 1998 at the age of 79. We honor him with his own page. Click here.

While visiting the area in the western part of the Carolinas that was known
as the Pendleton District when my ancestors lived there, we visited the "one-house
town" of Matkins, NC. It had originally been known as Williamsburg, but due
to the confusion with another (better known) town in Virginia, it was changed.
It's a longer story, but I will go into that later. Here are the folks who live
there. I have lost contact with them, so their first names escaped me. While
searching through my records I found a letter from him (Clarence Matkins). He
recently contacted me and sent me a packet of family info. I've received some
discs from him with all the info in ascii format which I hope to soon add to
these files.
